The Mirogoj Cemetery is considered as one of the most beautiful park cemeteries in Europe. The cemetery was created in 1876 on a land that belonged to the linguist Ljudevit Gaj. It is located on Herman Bollé street ; Herman Bollé was the Austrian architect who designed the cathedral of Zagreb, the arcades, the cupolas, and the big chapel in the entry way of the cemetery. The construction started in 1879 and was completed in 1829 The first burial took place in 1876. Nowadays there are about 300 000 people lying there. Two characteristics : - many famous Croatian buried in gorgeous monuments, adorned by impressive sculptures made by Croatian sculptors all kinds of religious groups can be found : Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, Jewishes, Muslims all the famous artistic, intellectual, and politics are buried there, the most of them under the arcades ; so that the cemetery tells the history of Zagreb. Behind the main chapel, one can find the grave of Franjo Tudman (Tjudman) 1922-1999, the first president of the Independant Croatia. He became President in 1990, as the HDZ won the first post-communist multi-party elections, and a year later he proclaimed Croatia’s independence. He was re-elected twice and remained in power until his death in 1999. He died before being charged by the International Criminal Court, which, in 2011, identified him as the chief of the criminal ethnic cleansing against the Serbian people.
